Cataldo presents a musical

Cataldo Catholic School students will dance and sing when they perform the musical comedy “Dear Edwina Junior” on Feb. 4 and Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. at University High School. The performance is about 12-year-old Edwina and her advice-giving extravaganza, The Dear Edwina Show. The show’s music is by Jenna Solberg and is directed by Maria Caprile.

LCHS students earn spots in state business competition

Students from Lake City High School are eligible for the state Business Professionals of America competition after placing in the regional competition held recently at North Idaho College. The state competition will be in March in Boise. First-place team winners include: Alyssa Allen, Marie Burns and Taran Loper for computer animation; Lloyd Castleberry, Keifer Hofacker and Dylan Kritz for software engineering; Ryan Rhode and Corbin Staaben for Web application; Ryan Hamilton, Jared Dibble and Chelsea Sampson for Web design; and Ashley Raveena and Ronique Brooke for presentation management.

Mead High presents ‘Broadway Night’

Broadway has come to Mead High School with “Broadway Night 2010,” at the Mead High School Theatre on Jan. 22 and Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. The production, performed by the choirs in coordination with students from the stagecraft class, is “completely original, utilizing music from classic and contemporary Broadway to weave an original story line together,” according to an e-mail from music teacher Mike Saccomanno.

Ramsey program recruits dads to serve as role models

Ramsey Elementary School will kick off itsWATCH D.O.G.S., or Dads of Great Students, program on Tuesday with a dads and kids pizza night from 6 to 7 p.m. at the school. The program is the safe-schools initiative of the National Center for Fathering and was created in response to the 1998 Jonesboro, Ark., school shooting. Since its inception, WATCH D.O.G.S. has spread to more than 800 schools in more than 30 states.

Book fairies pay visit to elementary school

Whitworth University education students, dressed as “book fairies,” surprised the children at Whitman Elementary School last Thursday and read stories to them as part of a community outreach project. According to a press release from the university, the project has been integrated into a Whitworth education course that is focused on reading and intended to promote literacy.

Lake City, Fernan students focus on giving during holiday season

Students in the Coeur d’Alene School District are helping those in need this holiday season. At Lake City High School, teams, clubs, classes, students and their families have signed up for the “Adopt-A-Family” program. With the help of the LCHS students, their families, and faculty, needy families in the community will be able to have a Christmas this year.

North Central High School students recently did their part to help those in need. Twenty-five students spent 13 hours beginning at 5 a.m. last Thursday camped out in front of Safeway on Northwest Boulevard for the school’s second annual food drive.

Artwork explores human rights

Sandpoint-area students in grades seven through 12 recently created pieces for “The Art of Human Rights.” The event is the third annual young artists’ exhibition of human rights-themed art and literature and is hosted by the Bonner County Human Rights Task Force and the Pend Oreille Arts Council.

Benjamin Boileau received the rank of Eagle Scout, for building a “Welcome” sign at the south entrance of Riverside State Park. He is the son of Joe and Donna Boileau of Spokane and graduated from Shadle Park High School in 2009.

Cooper’s Rona Williams receives principal award

The Spokane Elementary School Principals Association surprised Cooper Elementary Principal Rona Williams with the Dick Stannard Distinguished Elementary Principal of the Year award Tuesday morning. According to a press release from Spokane Public Schools, the award was named after a much-loved principal who passed away in 1996. The award is given to a principal who demonstrates purposeful leadership, excels in instructional leadership and resource development and possesses exemplary interpersonal skills.

Holy Family students offer thanks for principal

Students and parents at Holy Family Catholic School in Coeur d’Alene showed their appreciation for Principal Karen Durgin on Nov. 19 with more than just an ordinary thank you. Durgin’s students gave her a basket of handmade cards and gifts after a special prayer and then she was serenaded by the barbershop quartet, Coeur D’Nation, made up of Jim Peters, Joe Lykins, Bob Thackston and Dick Wagner.

LC presents ‘Guys and Dolls’

The drama students at Lewis and Clark High School will perform the Broadway hit “Guys and Dolls,” Dec. 3 through Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. in the LCHS Auditorium. The cast of the show includes: Madison Martin as nightclub performer Adelaide; Duncan Smith as Nathan, Adelaide’s devoted fiancé; Gabby Deede as Sarah Brown; Jesse Ward as Sky Masterson; Andreas Anderson as Nicely Nicely; and Emmet Stackelberg as Benny Southstreet.

Lake City High School is helping people in need and getting into the holiday spirit with its annual food drive. LCHS students and staff will be collecting nonperishable food, frozen turkeys and used cell phones through Wednesday.

Medical Lake Elementary School is holding a clothing swap through Friday, collecting children’s clean, gently used clothing for those in need. An exchange table will be available to parents during parent-teacher conferences on Monday and Tuesday and all families are welcome to participate.

Students letter in academics

Coeur d’Alene students will be awarded for their academic excellence and hard work on Wednesday at Lake City High School at 6:30 p.m. Students will receive letters for their academic achievement as part of the Renaissance Academic Lettering Program, rewarding juniors and seniors who have maintained at least a 3.75 grade-point average.

‘Taming of the Shrew’ at NC

North Central High School drama students will perform William Shakespeare’s comedic tale of spitfire Katherine Minola in “The Taming of the Shrew.” The students give the show a 1980s twist and include surprises to the classic story of Baptista Minola’s refusal to let his younger daughter, Bianca, marry until his older daughter marries first. Kate, also known as the shrew, comes with a huge dowry and is pursued by many suitors. But, Kate has little interest in marrying.

Students in the Coeur d’Alene School District will remember and honor veterans in a number of assemblies on Tuesday. Veterans Day is Wednesday. Woodland Middle School will hold a special morning assembly at 8 a.m. and Dalton Elementary School has planned a flag presentation, taps and other special songs for its 9:15 a.m. assembly.

School to receive $25,000 grant

Sunset Elementary School in Airway Heights will receive a $25,000 APPLE Construction Achievement Grant from the Washington Legislature and the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. State Sen. Bob Morton, R-Orient, and State Rep. Shelly Short, R-Addy, will present the award at a school assembly on Friday at 2:20 p.m., according to a press release from the school. The assembly will also honor students for achievement on the Washington Assessment of Student Learning, as well as others contributing to the school.

Football fans at Friday night’s Gonzaga Prep game will not only get to see a game, they’ll have the opportunity to score a two-for-one coupon at Triple Play Family Fun Park. Fans at the 7 p.m. game against Lewis and Clark who donate two new or gently used children’s books to the 13th annual KHQ Success By 6 Children’s Book Drive will receive a coupon to the family park in Hayden. Coeur d’Alene District students are invited to share their poetic talent at the Hayden Library’s Teen Poetry Slam on Monday, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Students can choose two original literary pieces and perform them live. Prizes will be awarded to students in grades six through 12.
