Book drive started for Kinder Center

Bryan Elementary is hosting a book drive for the Coeur d’Alene School District’s new Kinder Center, beginning Monday and continuing through Oct. 30. The Kinder Center is a new school this year and doesn’t have a library. Bryan is asking for donations of new and gently used books for Pre-K, kindergartners, first-graders, and second-graders.

Teaching them to play

Ramsey Elementary teacher Trena Burt was recently recognized as the 2009 Idaho Elementary Physical Education Teacher of the Year. Anna Wilson, principal at Ramsey, knows all about Burt’s dedication, in and out of the gym, and nominated her. She also accompanied Burt to Moscow earlier this month at a statewide P.E. and health teachers conference, where she was given the award during a luncheon.

Volleyball game benefits food bank

On Oct. 6, Mt. Spokane High School held a Peanut Butter and Jelly Alumni Volleyball Game to benefit Mead Food Bank. With the help of the community, Mt. Spokane students and staff, over 475 pounds of peanut butter and jelly were collected to help feed the hungry in the Mead area.

Orphans choir plans concerts

The Ugandan Orphans Choir, whose members live on the Ssese Islands in Lake Victoria in East Africa, plans to visit Northwest Christian Elementary School, 5104 E. Bernhill Road in Colbert, on Wednesday, to perform two concerts. The children will sing and dance in their national costumes for the students at a 9 a.m. chapel service, and again at 7 p.m. for the community.

Coeur d’Alene School District reports absence rate of 10 percent

Teachers in the Coeur d’Alene School District are seeing a drop in students in their classrooms as the flu season sets in. According to a press release on the district’s Web site, schools were seeing a 10 percent decrease at several Coeur d’Alene schools, as of last Monday. At Canfield Middle School, 80 out of 798 students were absent, according to the release. Lakes Middle School had an absentee rate of more than 10 percent, as did Woodland Middle School, Project CDA Alternative High School, Hayden Meadows Elementary School and Sorenson Elementary School. As of Sept. 25, seven out of the 17 Coeur d’Alene schools had one or more confirmed cases of H1N1, or swine flu.

Mead district offers free vaccinations

The Mead School District is taking extra precautions to keep students up-to-date on their vaccinations. The Spokane Regional Health District Clinic is offering a free immunization clinic for all Mead kids today at Shiloh Hills Elementary School, 12828 N. Newport Highway, from 3 to 6 p.m. The supplies are limited and parents must be present. Children must have their vaccination records for required immunizations to be identified.

Scholarships being offered for teen leadership training

The Kiwanis Clubs of Spokane County will host a Key Leader conference Oct. 9 through Oct. 11 in Chewelah, Wash. The Kiwanis are awarding a limited number of scholarships to students, valued at $175, to attend the conference. The conference will give participants the opportunity to learn to be leaders and grow within themselves. Kiwanis and Key Club members will teach leadership skills through serving others.

‘Friendship Bench’ centerpiece of tribute to teacher

The students, staff and community of Madison Elementary recently raised $400 for a “Friendship Bench,” to be dedicated to the memory of one of Madison’s second-grade teachers, Denae Johns. Johns died during the holiday break. The special bench will placed in memory of Johns in the main entryway of the school. The entryway will also feature side tables, doilies, homemade pillows, books, photos and favorite quotes of Johns’, all created by Madison’s staff members, to honor Johns’ generosity.

Writing camp open to juniors, seniors

Junior and senior writers who want to get a jump-start on the 2009-’10 school year must turn in their applications for the High School Writing Camp at Harriman State Park by Monday. The camp will be Aug. 2-8. The high school writers will have the opportunity to work together in small groups and one-on-one with professional writers to learn and improve their imaginative writing techniques. Authors Chris Dempsey, Catherine Jones and Nicole LeFavour will be working with the young writers.

Arcadia students make Mix Park a lab

Students from Arcadia Elementary School recently became scientists and made Mix Park in Deer Park their outdoor laboratory. The fun-filled day was a collaboration, put together by Arcadia teachers and Eastern Washington University education students.
