Ian Kolste leads Whitworth to La Verne

Overview: The Pirates are riding high after plundering Whittier last week 60-0. Whitworth racked up 605 yards of offense, including 442 in the first half as Whitworth built a 43-0 lead at halftime. The Pirates face a La Verne team that made the NCAA Div. III playoffs last season, but the Leopards stumbled out of the gate and fell 31-19 on Sept. 3 at Puget Sound.

Kamiakin dismantles Lewis and Clark 42-0

In a game that seemed over just as it began, the Kamiakin Braves invaded Joe Albi Friday and quickly set about taming the Lewis and Clark Tigers. Kamiakin ended the LC’s first drive after seven plays before the Braves started dominating. It ended with a 42-0 pasting of the Tigers, who had several players miss the game because of discipline issues.

In 2015, Whitworth quarterback Ian Kolste threw for 2,810 yards, ranking No. 22 in yardage for all of Division III. But he ranked 12th in the nation in passes completed per game with 24.5.

Whitworth returns plenty of firepower

The Whitworth Pirates pillaged every opponent they faced last year, save one monster that continues to bully the program, as it embraces the expectation of becoming the dominant Division III football program in the Northwest. Behind an emerging defense and the up-tempo, pass-first offense of former Shadle Park coach Alan Stanfield, the Pirates raced to a nine-win season and reached the NCAA Division III playoffs for only the third time in program history. But the Pirates’ reward for earning an at-large postseason bid was to again face powerhouse Linfield, which earlier had crushed the Bucs 52-10. The playoff result was similar, a 48-10 thrashing. “Whitworth, as a whole, is about winning Northwest Conference championships,” coach Rod Sandberg said. “We are definitely not there yet. You are not there until you beat them.
