Finnish Royalty Posts Feature Win At Playfair

Finnish Royalty, a gem of consistency, surged into the lead in the upper stretch and went on to register a three-quarter length victory in the featured ninth race Wednesday as Playfair Race Course began the second month of the Spokane horse racing season.

Ridden by Lane Rennaker, Finnish Royalty ran six furlongs in 1:11 2/5 and paid $9.20 as third choice in the betting. Winds in the North finished second, a half-length in front of Substance of Fire, the pacesetting favorite.

Finnish Royalty, a 5-year-old gelding, recorded his eighth victory in 24 career starts.

Leading jockey Marty Wentz also continued his recent run of success. Wentz, who hadn’t ridden regularly since 1990, not only ran his winning streak to 20 days, but he also collected three triumphs in 10 races as Playfair simulcast its races to 12 locations around the state for the first time this season. Wentz has 44 wins for the meet.
