Demo Derbies Planned At Fairgrounds

The sound of crunching metal, screaming go-karts and wailing trucks will split the night air tonight and Saturday at the Spokane Interstate Fairgrounds.

Now in its 12th year, the Hamm’s Motor Spectacular expands to a two-night format this year with demolition derbies, tough-truck competitions and SKRA alcohol gokart races both nights.

The event is sponsored by the Trentwood Lions Club, and proceeds will benefit community projects, said Bob Thompson, chairman. Children with sight and hearing deficiencies will be the chief beneficiaries of the Lions Club effort, he said.

The big event both nights is the demolition derby.

“You can’t believe how much people love to see cars smash into each other,” Thompson said.

“We’ll have 20 to 24 demo cars both nights, and in the Fairgrounds arena that’s a bunch.”

Between 15 and 20 tough trucks will compete in modified and street classes, leaping standing cars and running a gantlet of jumps and obstacles.

“It looks simple but it’s very demanding,” Thompson said. “We call it parts-breaking time.”

Several trucks are coming from Lewiston, the Tri-Cities and Oregon. For openers, a squadron of 15 karts will challenge a modified road course. The speedy little alcohol-fueled rigs normally race at an off-road course in Airway Heights, said Thompson.

Tickets for the Hamm’s Motor Spectacular are available at G&B Select-a-Seat outlets. Admission tonight is $8, $5 for kids 12 and under. Saturday, admission is $10, $6 for kids. The action begins at 8 p.m.<
