Ferris Tips Prep Behind Miller

Joe Miller pitched a three-hitter for Ferris as the visiting Saxons upset previously undefeated Gonzaga Prep 2-0 in Greater Spokane League baseball Tuesday.

In other GSL action, Shadle Park came from behind to beat Rogers 6-5, North Central outlasted Lewis and Clark 8-6 and Mead bettered Central Valley 6-3.

Miller struck out nine batters and raised his record to 2-1 for Ferris (2-3), while losing pitcher Forrest Higgins threw a five-hitter, striking out six.

After going scoreless through five innings, the Saxons scored two runs in the sixth, one off a wild pitch by Higgins. Prep fell to 4-1.

At Shadle Park, Steve Schaber led the Highlanders (5-1) with two RBIs in their 6-5 win over Rogers (4-1).

The Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning with the help of Adrian Olson’s two-run single.

Going into the sixth inning, the Pirates led 4-2, but the Highlanders exploded for a four-run inning to take the lead for good.

The Pirates stranded two runners in the seventh inning after scoring a run to get within one run.

Winning pitcher Chris Wilson pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters, and went 2 for 4 at the plate, hitting two doubles.

Two errors by Lewis and Clark in the seventh inning proved costly as the Tigers (0-5) fell to visiting North Central (2-3) 8-6.

The game was tied 6-6 going into the final inning when the Tigers committed two errors, allowing North Central to score two unearned runs.

Damian Long pitched a complete game and struck out seven batters in Mead’s 6-3 win over visiting Central Valley (2-4).

Four errors by the Bears was the difference in the game as the Panthers scored two unearned runs.

D.J. Funk led the Panthers at the plate, going 3 for 3 with an RBI while teammate Ray Hattenburg went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Softball

In one of four Greater Spokane League blowouts, Gonzaga Prep (4-1) defeated Ferris (0-5) 10-0.

In other GSL games, North Central hammered Lewis and Clark 16-0, Rogers blanked Shadle Park 11-0 and Mead ousted Central Valley 10-2.

Katie Shrope pitched a one-hitter in her first league start, striking out five and walking two.

Kelly Jones went 2 for 2 and had three RBIs, Theresa Palmer added a three-run triple in the fourth inning and doubled, and Julie Weiskopf went 3 for 4 and had an RBI.

The Saxons committed five errors, which allowed four runs.

Denise Devereaux led North Central (2-3) with three hits in its win over host Lewis and Clark (1-4).

Devereaux slammed a three-run double in the third inning.

The Indians also capitalized on seven errors by the Tigers.

Traci Moore pitched a one-hitter, striking out seven, in Rogers’ 11-0 win over host Shadle Park (1-5).

Charlotte Perry had three RBIs for the Pirates (4-1), including a two-run home run in the third inning.

Perry, Shannon Zahrowski, Mandy Flores and Angel Fairbanks had two hits apiece in the win.

Mead (2-4) scored eight runs in the first inning in a 10-2 win over visiting Central Valley (3-3).

Many of the first-inning runs were a result of errors by the Bears, who had seven for the game.

Pitcher Holly Turner earned her fifth win of the season.
