Jaguars Embarrass Afc Pick Miami
NFL preseason
Don’t bother reminding the Jacksonville Jaguars it was only an exhibition. They know, but they just want to savor their first victory a while.
“This is like winning the Super Bowl,” Jaguars quarterback Steve Beuerlein said after Scott Sisson kicked a 32-yard field goal with 1 second left Friday night to beat the Miami Dolphins 24-21 in Miami.
“But you’ve got to keep things in perspective.”
Ryan Christopherson scored three touchdowns and Sisson picked up where he left off in college. Sisson kicked three game-winning field goals to help secure Georgia Tech an unbeaten 1990 season.
The kick left the Dolphins, the defending AFC East champions, disappointed.
“This should not be the time to panic,” said Dolphins defensive end Trace Armstrong. “Phoenix (site of the Super Bowl) is a long way off. But we have a lot of work to do.”
Miami beefed up its defensive front in the off-season with the addition of Steve Emtman and Armstrong, who both made big defensive plays early. But the Jaguars, led by James Stewart’s 79 yards, rushed for 230 yards, most coming after the first period when Miami reserves took over. Miami had 61 yards rushing.
Dan Marino played two series for Miami, completing 2 of 4 passes.
Tom Braatz, director of college scouting for the Dolphins, was rushed to a hospital after complaining of weakness and dizziness while watching the game.
Bengals 34, Colts 21
Jason Burns, playing much of the second half, ran for 52 yards and scored a third-quarter touchdown as the visiting Bengals beat Indianapolis in their preseason opener.
Bears 18, Panthers 15
In Chicago, Kevin Butler kicked a 51-yard field goal with 1:52 left and Chicago rallied behind third-string quarterback Shane Matthews to beat expansion Carolina.
After Carolina’s John Kasay, formerly of Seattle, kicked his fifth field goal, a 44-yarder with 7:49 left, the Panthers had a 15-7 lead.
Lions 30, Patriots 17
Johnnie Morton returned a punt 77 yards to set up the go-ahead touchdown and lead Detroit past New England at Foxboro, Mass.
Drew Bledsoe completed his first six passes, finishing 6 of 7 for 76 yards and a touchdown in two series for New England.
Steelers 31, Bills 10
Pittsburgh’s defense sacked rookie quarterback Todd Collins twice, forced two interceptions and scored a touchdown in a rout of Buffalo.
