Joey Cora Delivers For The M’S Streak Reaches Four After 10-9 Win Over Chicago

Associated Press

Joey Cora singled home Alex Diaz from second base with one out in the ninth inning to give the Seattle Mariners their fourth straight victory, a 10-9 decision over the Chicago White Sox Tuesday night.

Cora, who put the Mariners ahead 9-8 with a pinch RBI single in the seventh inning, beat his former team by singling on a 1-0 pitch from Roberto Hernandez (2-5), Chicago’s closer.

After striking out Tino Martinez to open the ninth, Hernandez walked Diaz, who promptly stole second. Hernandez then walked Seattle pinch hitter Doug Strange before Cora got his game-winning hit.

Bobby Ayala (4-4), Seattle’s closer and the fifth Mariners pitcher, got the victory with 1-1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

After the Mariners went ahead 9-8 in the seventh inning, the White Sox came back to tie the score in the eighth. Mike Devereaux doubled off Jeff Nelson for his third RBI of the game.

Seattle’s Mike Blowers tied the score 8-8 in the sixth inning off Jose DeLeon with his 14th homer of the season, 410 feet over the center-field fence.

The White Sox took an 8-5 lead with a three-run fifth off Salomon Torres. Lance Johnson had an RBI double, and Dave Martinez and Robin Ventura followed with run-scoring singles.

Rich Amaral had a two-run single in Seattle’s fifth.

Jay Buhner tied the score 5-5 with a grand slam off rookie Mike Bertotti to cap a five-run Seattle fourth. Buhner’s 20th homer of the season, a 417-foot shot over the center-field fence, was his second in two nights.

The Mariners got their first run in the fourth on a bases-loaded walk to Edgar Martinez.

Andy Benes made his second start for the Mariners - and first in Seattle - since his July 31 trade from San Diego. He won his first game at California 10-7 last Thursday, but lasted only 3-2/3 innings this time, giving up home runs to Johnson in the first inning and Barry Lyons in the second.

The White Sox chased Benes in the fourth when they took a 5-0 lead. Tim Raines had an RBI double and Devereaux singled in two runs.
