Tyson Date, Opponent Set
Promoter Don King announced plans to forge ahead with Mike Tyson’s second bout on Nov. 4 at the MGM Grand head-to-head against Riddick Bowe-Evander Holyfield III the same night at Caesars Palace just down the Las Vegas Strip.
As expected, Tyson’s second opponent will be Buster Mathis Jr. Reacting to widespread criticism of Tyson’s victory over Peter McNeeley, King said pay-per-view prices will be lower than the $40 to $50 charged for the last fight.
The Tyson card will be on Showtime Event Television, while Bowe-Holyfield III will be shown on TVKO, the pay-per-view arm of HBO.
International Boxing Federation lightweight champion Oscar de la Hoya is scheduled to defend his title against Tracy Patterson on Dec. 15 at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
Former heavyweight champion James “Bonecrusher” Smith retired, ending his 14-year career after stopping Tommy Williams in the third round. Smith, 42, is the only heavyweight champion to graduate from college, earning a business degree from Shaw University in 1975.
