Defense Answers Call In First Ewu Scrimmage

Eastern Washington’s defense took advantage of an experimenting offense as the Eagles concluded their first week of two-a-day football practices with a scrimmage Thursday afternoon in Cheney.

The young defense held the more experienced offense to two touchdowns in 88 plays. The defense also intercepted four passes and held the offense to 293 total yards.

Linebacker Ho Pak, a transfer from Orange Coast (Calif.) Junior College, led the defense with a pair of interceptions and six tackles that included a pair for losses. Senior linebacker Dion Alexander added three passes broken up and four tackles, including one for a loss.

Sophomore Brian Sherick, expected to be Eastern’s starting quarterback, completed just 5 of 19 passes for 55 yards. The team’s other three quarterbacks were a combined 8 of 17 for 67 yards and four interceptions.

Rex Prescott rushed for 67 yards, with Joe Sewell adding 58 and starter David Lewis contributing 43.

The only touchdowns scored were a 4-yard run by Lewis and a 23-yard hook-up by a pair of Walla Walla Community College transfers - quarterback Scott Bond and receiver Antwan Miller.

“We ran the major part of offense just to see what would happen,” said head coach Mike Kramer. “We wanted to look at some new plays to see if they’re worth keeping.”

The Eagles missed tight ends Tim Hunsaker and Scott Johnson. Hunsaker has a muscle strain, and Johnson broke his clavicle early in the scrimmage and may redshirt.
