Maleeva Moves Into Final

Second-seeded Jana Novotna pulled up lame with a bad toe midway through her semifinal against Magdalena Maleeva at the Pathmark Classic in Mahwah, N.J., retiring while leading 6-4, 3-4.

Maleeva, seeded third, will face sixth-seeded Chanda Rubin in Sunday’s final. Rubin beat Ai Sugiyama of Japan 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 in a night match.

Top-seeded Thomas Muster of Austria needed almost 3 hours to earn a spot in the final of the $375,000 Croatia Open tennis tournament in Umag, Croatia, beating fifth-seeded Francisco Clavet of Spain 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 (7-3) in the semifinal. Muster will face seventh-seeded Carlos Costa in the final.

Top-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia defeated Switzerland’s Marc Rosset for the first time in six career meetings to reach the final of the Genovese Hamlet Cup in Commack, N.Y. He will play unseeded Jan Siemerink of the Netherlands.
