Ferris Demolishes Cheney

AAA/AA boys

Wayne Gilman saw some things his basketball team needed to improve before the Greater Spokane League season opens Tuesday.

And that’s a scary thought.

Ferris held Cheney to 11 points in the first half and put four players in double figures and coasted to a 65-42 victory at Cheney Friday night.

“Generally, I was happy,” Gilman said. “I was really happy with our firsthalf defense. Our guys did a good job defending their better players. I was happy with our transition baskets - we got the break going.”

That’s how the Saxons (3-0) rolled to a 33-11 halftime lead. Cheney (1-2) hit just 5 of 23 shots, was outrebounded 23-9 and had nine turnovers.

“We didn’t get any second and third shots,” Cheney coach Denny Humphrey said. “It’s not the loss that concerns me, it’s the way we played in the first half. Ferris is a good team, but we’re a Double-A team, we have to score more than 11 points.”

So, what is Gilman worried about, considering the Saxons hit 15 of 28 shots in the first half, 13 of 22 in the second and held Cheney to 18 of 48 for the game?

“Our execution against good man-to-man defense needs to be a little better. We have to be more patient exploring what’s open. We were a little quick to shoot.”

The Saxons play defending Big Nine champion Kamiakin tonight at Ferris. Then Ferris opens GSL play against defending league champion Mead before facing highly-regarded Gonzaga Prep, both at the Arena.

“We’re in real tough right out of the chute. We made good progress in preseason, but I sure wouldn’t want to make any predictions,” Gilman said.

After a slow start, the Saxons took off.

Leonard Harmon scored the first two baskets off offensive rebounds as Ferris was 2 for 10. However, the Saxons made their last four shots, including a powerful dunk by Scott Stocum for a 14-4 lead. They followed that with a 9-of-13 second quarter of mostly layups and a 10-point run to close it out.
