Sonics Ride Schrempf, Kemp To Romp Two Combine For 53 Points As Seattle Knocks Off Portland

Associated Press

Locked into a physical battle with the Portland Trail Blazers, the Seattle SuperSonics got the inside power they needed from Detlef Schrempf and Shawn Kemp.

Schrempf scored 28 points on 10 for 17 shooting and had seven rebounds, four assists and one turn-over. Kemp was a force inside Saturday night with 25 points and 13 rebounds in the Sonics’ 106-97 win.

The Sonics like to be aggressive on defense, and the game reflected their style. There were 61 fouls, 44 turnovers, 10 technical fouls and two ejections.

Kemp was eager to force the action inside.

“I kind of slacked off a bit against Sacramento,” said Kemp, who had 12 points in the Sonics 120-103 victory on Friday. “So, I was looking to be more aggressive down low and try and draw the double-team. When they didn’t double-team, I tried to take advantage of it.”

The Blazers covered Kemp mostly one-on-one. He roamed inside for reverse dunks inside against Chris Dudley, Buck Williams, Cliff Robinson and Arvydas Sabonis.

“When he gets his confidence going, he’s tough one-on-one,” Portland’s Rod Strickland said.

The Blazers point guard had 13 points and 13 assists before he was ejected with 1:15 left in the game arguing a non-call with replacement official Mike Bobiak.

While Kemp muscled inside, Schrempf excelled in transition and scored on jump shots from around the perimeter.

“They killed us in transition early,” Portland coach P.J. Carlesimo said.

Schrempf was the primary architect of that early surge. The two-time All-Star got the Sonics off to a quick start with 13 points in the opening quarter.

“Detlef had a great game,” Sonics guard Hersey Hawkins said. “He and Shawn really were the difference.”

Hawkins had 14 points after scoring 34 in the victory over Sacramento. Schrempf ignited an 11-3 thirdquarter spurt when the Sonics snapped a 65-65 tie to forge a 76-68 lead after three quarters.

He capped a 16-7 flurry in the fourth quarter with a driving layup for a 96-82 lead with 2:43 left.

“We didn’t play with confidence because we got off to a slow start and fell behind early,” Portland forward Cliff Robinson said.
