Heels Dance Back To Top

Compiled From Wire Services

For the second time this season, North Carolina has replaced Massachusetts as the No. 1 team in The Associated Press college basketball poll.

The Tar Heels (18-1) moved into the top spot two days after Massachusetts was beaten 78-75 by George Washington. In early December, North Carolina also moved up one spot to replace the Minutemen (17-2), who lost at that time to Kansas in their first week ever as a No. 1.

Their run went on to last four weeks, one shorter than North Carolina’s when it took over the top spot earlier this season before losing at North Carolina State.

The Tar Heels received 48 first-place votes and 1,629 points from the national media panel, while Kansas (17-2) moved up one place to second with 17 No. 1 votes and 1,598 points.

Connecticut and Tennessee remained 1-2 in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll and Colorado moved into the top three for the first time this season.

University of Montana senior forward Matt Kempfert has been selected the Big Sky Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week.

At Champaign, Illinois, llini center Shelly Clark had his third run-in with the law since October when he was arrested on traffic charges last weekend. Clark, 22, was charged with driving with a suspended license Sunday, according to a Champaign police report.
