Late Mistakes Cost Gonzaga Road Victory

From Staff And Wire Reports

WCC

Making only 3 of 8 free-throw attempts in the final 5 minutes of the game Saturday night, the Gonzaga University Bulldogs saw Portland slip past them in the final minute at Portland’s Chiles Arena.

The 74-71 Pilots win snapped a five-game West Coast Conference winning streak for the Bulldogs (5-7, 16-8).

GU once owned a 13-point lead, and led 71-68 with 50 seconds left, but a pair of turnovers and two fouls allowed the Pilots (8-4, 17-7) to take control.

“It’s so frustrating because we played really good basketball,” GU coach Dan Fitzgerald said. “We made an admirable effort, but we made big mistakes at the wrong time. We were ahead by three inside of a minute left and we lose it. It’s like the old throat closed up a little bit.”

Lemont Daniels and Ray Ross hit two free throws apiece in the final 23 seconds.

Jon Kinloch topped all scorers with 18 points for Gonzaga, while Kyle Dixon added 15 and John Rillie 14.

Portland took its first lead since the opening tip, 68-67, with 2:54 left in the game.

A pair of free throws by Dixon pushed Gonzaga ahead 71-68 with 53 seconds left, but freshman Dionn Holton closed the gap to 71-70 with 37 seconds showing.

Ross then made a midcourt steal on a Portland full-court trapping defense and Daniels followed with two free throws to give the Pilots a 72-71 lead with 23 seconds left.

GU wraps up the regular season at home in the Martin Centre Thursday against San Francisco and Saturday vs. San Diego.
