Chang, Haarhuis Prevail
Defending champion Michael Chang beat Jonathan Stark 6-7 (7-5), 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in the quarterfinals of the U.S. Indoor Tennis Tournament at Philadelphia.
Chang will face Paul Haarhuis today in a rematch of the 1994 final. Haarhuis followed his upset of top-ranked Pete Sampras with an easy 6-2, 6-3 victory over New Zealander Brett Steven.
The other semifinal pits No. 2 Andre Agassi, who brushed off qualifier Sebastien Lareau 7-5, 6-2, against 20-yearold Thomas Enqvist of Sweden, a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Richey Reneberg.
Five days after losing to Yevgeny Kafelnikov at Milan, top-seeded Boris Becker beat the 21-year-old Russian 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-1) to reach the semifinals of the $2.25 million Eurocard Open in Stuttgart, Germany.
Michael Stich, the fifth seed, defeated Alexander Volkov 6-2, 7-5, to set up a semifinal against Becker, his on-and-off Davis Cup partner and rival.
In other quarterfinals, Richard Krajicek beat Magnus Larsson 6-3, 6-7 (9-11), 7-6 (7-5) and Martin Damm defeated Jan Siemerink 6-4, 6-4.
Top-seeded Jana Novotna and unseeded players Meike Babel, Beate Reinstadler and Barbara Rittner advanced to the semifinals of the WTA indoor tournament in Linz, Austria.
Novotna defeated Petra Schwarz-Ritter of Austria 6-1, 1-6, 6-2.
