Bailey Blazes To Win
Donovan Bailey ran 100 meters in 9.91 seconds at the Canadian track and field championships at Montreal, shattering the national record and posting the best time in the world this year.
Bruny Surin was runner-up in 9.97, the second-fastest time in the world this year. It was believed to be the first time two athletes from the same country, other than the United States, had gone under 10 seconds in the same race.
Bailey already had the world’s best time this year, a 9.99 in April, which had broken Surin’s previous Canadian record of 10.02.
The wind was well within the permitted limit at 1.3 meters per second. The world record is 9.85 set by Leroy Burrell of the United States in 1994.
