New Mexico Trips Stars U-13 Team

The Spokane Stars U-13 team lost its opening game at the AAU Junior Olympics basketball tournament in Amarillo, Texas, on Saturday, falling to New Mexico 43-41 in overtime.

Courtney Ferguson led Spokane with eight points and five rebounds. Her free throw with 25 seconds left in regulation pulled Spokane into a 40-40 tie and forced overtime.

Spokane resumes pool play tonight at 5:15 when it meets Oklahoma.

North Idaho BSP opened pool play at the John Ferrel Nike National Prep Championship in Las Vegas with a loss to Minnesota Select Gold 62-42.

Rafe Hewett of Lapwai scored 11 points, dished out four assists and had five rebounds for North Idaho. Kellogg’s Casey Fisher added six points and six rebounds.

North Idaho continues pool play today with a game against a team from Connecticut.

Soccer

The U-18 Washington East team reached the finals of the Olympic Developmental Western Regionals after a 5-1 victory over British Columbia in a semifinal game at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M.

Jeremy VanVoorhis of Freeman opened the scoring with a goal in the first half. After British Columbia tied it, Trever Booth of Lewis and Clark scored the go-ahead goal.

In the second half, Jimmy Morton of Mead, Andy Tyson of Pasco, and VanVoorhis each scored.

Washington East faces Washington West for the championship today at 10 a.m. The two Washington teams have split their two previous matches.
