Boxing Champs Lose

Five 1995 U.S. boxing champions were in gold medal matches, but three went out losers at the Olympic Festival in Denver.

The winners were Carlos Navarro of Los Angeles, who won 31-9 over Jorge Munoz of El Paso, Texas, at 119 pounds and Terrance Cauthen of Philadelphia, who beat Larry Nicholson of Tyler, Texas 20-8 at 132 pounds.

Heavyweight Lamon Brewster of Los Angeles lost 29-20 to Davarryl Williamson of Phoenix. Pedro Pena (106) of Los Angeles lost 22-16 to Albert Guardado of Topeka, Kan., and Arnulfo Bravo (112) of South Lake Tahoe, Nev., lost 18-11 to Eric Morel of Madison, Wis..

The Olympic Festival track lineup was strengthened when triple jumper Mike Conley said he would compete. He joins Carl Lewis, Dan O’Brien, Dave Johnson and Quincy Watts, among others.

A light festival schedule included the last round of women’s 3-meter diving and men’s platform diving.
