Portland Hires Ex-WSU Star Hill
Eddie Hill, a record-setting 3-point shooter at Washington State, has been hired as an assistant basketball coach at the University of Portland, the school announced Friday.
Hill, 22, graduated from Washington State with a degree in psychology in 1994 and has worked the past year as a mental health counselor.
In the 1993-94 season, Hill set single-season and career 3-point records for the Cougars. His career total of 233 3-pointers ranks second in the Pacific-10 Conference.
American Legion baseball
Chapter Eleven/Longhorn and M&L Construction each took one-game leads as the best-of-three playoff series began at Shadle Park.
Tim Amann pitched a complete-game six-hitter for Chapter Eleven/ Longhorn, which defeated Spokane Federal Credit Union 6-0. Teammates Chris Wilson and Christian Ross each had two hits, while Kyle Huett drove in two runs.
M&L, meanwhile, beat Spokane Athletic Supply 11-4, getting a solo home run from D.J. Funk and four errors courtesy SAS.
Jeff Rinck pitched the full seven innings for the victory, and got two hits apiece from Matt Armitage, Ray Hattenburg and Sam Chimienti.
R.J. Delmese led SAS, going 2 for 3. Teammate Monte Morgan doubled.
Nelson wins Amateur
Birk Nelson of Pendleton, Ore., stood up to the test of the Canterwood Golf & Country Club course in Gig Harbor, Wash., and wrestled the 7,094-yard layout to the ground to run away with the Pacific Coast Amateur title.
The senior at Oregon State did it with his fourth consecutive round of par or better, and completed his 72-hole run without hitting a ball out of bounds on the tight layout.
His final-round 72 left him at 1-under-par 287, three strokes ahead of his summer rival, David Lebeck (72-290) of Portland, and Kennewick’s Scott Johnson (73-290).
In Tacoma, Dustin Brett applied the clincher on his home course, the 6,400-yard, par-71 Fircrest Golf Club layout, winning the 19th Washington Junior Association title.
Brett, a senior at Bellarmine Prep, closed with a 71 for a 215 total - 2 over for 54 holes - to defeat first-round leader Ryan Earl of Olympia by four strokes. Earl shot 73.
Based on WJGA points standings in tournaments during the last year, Brett led the qualifiers for the Washington team for the Junior Americas Cup matches Aug. 1-3 on the Crane Creek course at Boise. He will be joined by Joe Valente of Renton, Andy Hastings of Spokane and Jess Daley of Kent.
Kelli Kamumura closed with an even-par 75 for a wire-to-wire victory in the girls championship on the 5,995-yard Fircrest layout.
St. George’s names coach
Kari McKay will coach the St. George’s High School cross country team this season. McKay replaces Ross Thomas.
Thomas will remain coach of the baseball and girls basketball teams.
Basketball
Spokane Seafirst Select defeated Arkansas River Valley 89-74 at the BCI National Tournament in Tempe, Ariz., getting 18 points apiece from Mike Homer and Paul Mencke. Damian Long added 13 points for Spokane (2-2), which outscored Arkansas 34-26 in the fourth quarter.
Spokane plays Oregon today.
Also at the BCI Tournament, Los Angeles Avia slipped past Chewelah 59-56, pushing Chewelah into a consolation-bracket game today against a team from northern California.
Jeremy and Billy Landram scored 20 and 19 points, respectively, for Chewelah, while Chris Boone and Matt Shiflett helped limit 6-foot-8 Los Angeles star Nathan Walton to 14 points. Walton’s is the son of Hall of Famer Bill Walton.
In another BCI game, Washington State (Seattle) defeated Northwest (Spokane) 66-39 despite 11 points from Chris Hardan.
