Heather Cassidy Named To Honor Roll Of Teachers
Heather Cassidy, Chase Middle School biology teacher, was named to the national Association of Science-Technology Centers’ 1995 honor roll of teachers. She received an award of $1,000 and a plaque for herself and one for her school.
She has worked with “Science Celebration” classes since 1986 and has written several workshops such as “Crime Lab Chemistry” and “Kitchen Chemistry.” She has developed and taught teacher training workshops on hands-on science to teachers in the Spokane area. One of her techniques is giving out live insects to teachers to enliven student interest in science in the classroom.
She previously taught at Rogers High School, St. George’s School and Discovery School. She will be flown to Washington, D.C., this spring to be honored before members of Congress, along with approximately 40 other educators.
The following young people have earned their Eagle Scout awards:
Matt Pierce, of Troop 420, is a freshman at Horizon Junior High School and participates in cross country and wrestling at University High School. He is a member of the Boy Scouts Order of the Arrow service organization and also is a member of the National Junior Honor Society. His service project consisted of landscaping of the entrance to the parking lot at St. John Vianney. His is the son of Gary and Jan Pierce, Spokane.
James Taylor, of Troop 207, is a seventh-grader at Riverside Middle School, Chattaroy, where he is active in sports and band, as well as being on the honor roll. In his scout unit, he serves as patrol leader and is a den chief for Cub Scout Pack 207. His service project consisted of installing two permanent meditation benches in the Elk Cemetery in Elk. He is the son of Ray and Barbara Taylor, Newport, Wash.
Erik Stark, of Troop 473, is a senior at University High School and is active in sports and serves as an Associated Student Body officer. He is involved with the Grange and Amateur Athletic Union basketball. His service project consisted of designing and building a portable scoreboard for North Pines Junior High School with the assistance of Scouts from his troop.
Barry Lalonde, of Troop 473, is a senior at University High School where he is the photo editor of the yearbook. He is also working on the video yearbook for his school. His service project consisted of evaluating the handicapped access for Spokane Valley United Methodist Church and, with the help of troop members, he repainted the parking lot with correct handicapped parking markings and signs.
