Lindros Still Mending

Compiled From Wire Services

Eric Lindros will not play tonight when the Philadelphia Flyers face the Buffalo Sabres in the NHL playoffs.

“He is traveling with the team; he is day-to-day,” team spokesman Joe Klueg said. “He will be evaluated again Thursday.”

Lindros, one of the best players in the league, has been sidelined because of a bruise under his left eye. A puck hit him in the face on a ricochet of his shot on April 30 against the New York Rangers.

The Rangers went on to win 2-0, and some worried how the Flyers would manage in the playoffs. So far, they’ve defeated the Sabres twice in their best-of-seven opening series.

A major step toward bringing the Winnipeg Jets to Minnesota was taken when the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission approved a presentation to the governor and the Legislature.

The commission unanimously gave its chairman and executive director authority to work out financing and other details of the plan, which Gov. Arne Carlson first proposed last week.

Most estimates say the state would have to invest about $20 million to close the gap between the asking price for the team and what potential owners are willing to pay. But one commission member said the figure should not exceed about $9 million.

Edmonton, Alberta, will be the site of the NHL Entry Draft this year. Edmonton was given the draft instead of the original city, Winnipeg, which is certain to have its franchise relocate.
