West Valley Girls Can Clinch Another Track Title Today

Dave Trimmer Staff Writer

The West Valley girls can make it official today - a win at Cheney will give the Eagles their fourth straight Frontier League track title.

Though WV has clinched a tie, this class of seniors has no intention of sharing the crown.

In other FL meets, boys champion East Valley is the host against Pullman at West Valley and Clarkston is at Colville. All meets begin at 3:30 p.m.

The Greater Spokane League heads into postseason competition today and Friday with the District 8/Taco Time meet at Spokane Falls Community College.

The top eight individuals and four relay teams advance to the regional meet with Big Nine competitors next weekend. Because there are 16 entries per event (eight relays), tonight’s semifinal heats take on added importance.

Field events begin at 5 p.m. both days, except for today’s long jump and Friday’s triple jump, which start at 4:30. Running events start at 6.

The Frontier League meet is next week at Cheney. Time trials and a couple finals are Tuesday evening with the finals and remaining field events on Friday. Only one FL competitor per event goes to state.

On Saturday, the Panorama League has its league meet at SFCC and the Northeast A has its subdistrict at Central Valley.

CV gets new coach

Central Valley has hired Laurie Henry as its head volleyball coach. A CV alum, Henry has been coaching volleyball for the past five years. She also has experience in basketball and softball.

Eight not quite enough

Twenty seniors, 12 from playoff teams, make up the East team for the B-8 All-Star football game.

The game will be played in Odessa on June 30, the same day as the AAA/AA all-star classic in Spokane. On June 24, Class A and B-11 players have an all-star game in Yakima.

State champion Touchet is represented by Brent Jaggar, Travis Dodd and Ricky Boualpha.

Inchelium, which lost to Touchet in the semifinals, has Cody Desautel and Ty Stensgar.

Other players from playoff teams are Josh Bay, J.B. Broeckel and Brent Wigen of LaCrosseWashtucna, Gene Korby and Nick Cobert of Sprague-Harrington and Greg Nereim and John Goldsworth of Rosalia.

Representing the host school are Deric Schmierer, Mike Classen and Jeff Zagelow.

Other players are Heath BarnesBailey of St. John-Endicott, Adrian McArthur of Colton, Brook Nelson of Cusick and Robert Hinchcliffe and Jeremy Riggers of Waitsburg.

Someone old, someone new

Lewis and Clark went to the far reaches of the state to find a permanent activities coordinator, hiring Allan Bredy, wrestling coach at Bellingham High School.

In addition, North Central has taken the word interim off John McCoy’s title.

Bredy replaces Jack Blair, who died in December. John Hook has filled in, but Hook chose to continue as LC’s football coach. McCoy succeeded Mick Miller, who left NC last fall to become the principal at Kelso, near Vancouver.

GSL, FL tennis playoffs

The Greater Spokane League boys and girls tennis district tourneys start today at nine Spokane locations.

Two rounds of boys singles will be at Hart Field and Ferris while doubles action will be at Central Valley. Match play begins at 1:30.

For the girls, the first two rounds of singles play begin at North Central and Rogers and the doubles matches will be played at Mission Park and Mead. Like the boys, the girls will play two rounds on Saturday with all contests scheduled to begin at 1:30.

On Friday, boys singles and doubles contests will be played at Ferris and the girls singles and doubles will be held at Hart Field. Starting times for both are 1:30.

On Monday, all matches will be held at Central Valley, starting at 3:45. The top four finishers in each category will advance to the regional tournament May 19-20 at a site to be determined.

In Frontier League play, boys and girls singles start May 16 at 10 a.m. at Washington State University while boys and girls doubles will be held May 20 at 10 a.m., also at WSU. Winners will advance to the AA state playoffs.
