WSU’s Slack Finishes Fourth In Decathlon
College track
Washington State University freshman Leo Slack finished fourth at the Pacific-10 Conference decathlon championships Saturday in Tucson, Arizona, with a personal-best total of 7,407 points.
Jeromy Williams led a trio of Oregon athletes to the top-three places by scoring 7,806 points.
Slack, in the third decathlon of his career, tallied a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA championships.
Slack had personal-best efforts in the pole vault, 15 feet, 1 inch, and 110-meter hurdles, 15.44 seconds windaided. He also ran 5:01.12 in the 1,500.
WSU will have a squad of 24 men at the Pac-10 championships next weekend at Tucson.
WSU sophomore Heidi Shultz finished in sixth place during the Pac-10 heptathlon at Tucson.
Shultz earned a personal-best 4,977 points. She added 113 points to her previous best heptathlon.
Shultz began with an 18- long jump, a personal best by 7 inches. She ran second in the 800 meters in a personal-best 2:20.72.
California’s Ifeoma Ozoeze, the Italian heptathlon record holder, scored 5,624 to win the event. Arizona’s Rebecca Butt was second with 5,386.
Modesto Relays
Eastern Washington’s women’s 400 relay team of Nakia Walker, Christian White, Chunfranae Nicholson and Joyce Rainwater ran a 46.34 to first first, .06 ahead of Goldwin at Modesto, Calif.
WSU sophomore Yashiva Edwards ran 56.42 to place second in the 400.
Seattle Pacific Invite
Jenny Zenner and Kim Hulse of the WSU women and Noah Chambreau of the EWU men earned second-place finishes in Seattle.
Zenner ran 1:06.63 in the 400 hurdles. Hulse threw 43-11 in the shot put and was third in the discus at 132-4. Chambreau tossed the discus 162-2.
NAIA regional
Whitworth’s Jochannon Lowe won the 100 and was second in the 200 at the Northwest Association of Independent Colleges regional meet in Tacoma.
Lowe ran 10.86 in the 100 and 22.34 in the 200. Joseph Dias of Western Oregon won the 200 in 22.08.
Whitworth’s Andy Martin was second (15:01.75) in the 5,000.
The Whitworth women had fourth-place finishes from Gail Pitman in the javelin and Trina Gumm in the discus. Pitman threw 142-2, Gumm 132-10.
Both Pirate teams finished in 10th place. Host Pacific Lutheran University won both meets.
The Lute men scored 139.5 to top second-place Western Oregon’s 116. The PLU women’s 186 more than doubled runner-up University of Puget Sound (86).
Chris Myhr of Simon Fraser was named outstanding male performer after winning the 1,500 and 5,000. Whitworth’s Andy Martin (15:01.75) was 2 seconds back of Myhr in the 5,000.
PLU’s Sandy Metzger won the 100 and 200 to earn women’s outstanding performer.
