Milloy Ready For Sun Bowl; Five Pacific-10 Players Awarded

Compiled From Wire Services

Free safety Lawyer Milloy should be able to play for the No. 20 Washington Huskies in the Sun Bowl.

Milloy, who was named a first-team All-American on Tuesday by the Football Writers Association of America and the Football News, missed the second half of Saturday’s Apple Cup victory over Washington State after breaking a bone in his left big toe.

A magnetic resonance image taken Monday revealed the small break. Milloy will not need surgery and should be able to play in the Dec. 29 game at El Paso, Texas, the Huskies said.

Milloy was one of five Pac-10 players named to the All-American team.

The others were:

UCLA running back Karim Abdul-Jabbar; UCLA offensive tackle Jonathan Ogden; USC receiver Keyshawn Johnson; and Arizona linebacker Tedy Bruschi.

Husky rakes Leaf

Washington State’s Ryan Leaf had an impressive starting debut, completing 22 of 33 passes for 291 yards against Washington. The comparisons to Drew Bledsoe have begun.

“I don’t like him,” disagreed Washington cornerback Reggie Reser.

“As far as his ability, he has a slow motion.”

Perhaps Reser was just upset that, earlier in the week, Leaf called the UW secondary a “weakness.” Young though he may be, Leaf figures to be one of the more brash quarterbacks in the league, if he doesn’t grow out of this phase.

Explaining a decision to cancel a recruiting trip to Oregon, he said, “I did it just to see how they would react.”

Asked about being told by Washington coaches that he could walk on, he responded, “I didn’t know that was an honor.”

The last word

Oregon won the battle of the Northwest by beating Washington a few weeks ago, and then edged out the conference co-champion Huskies for the Cotton Bowl berth.

“I will play Washington anytime, anywhere,” said Oregon coach Mike Bellotti. “We’ve got the higher ranking, better record, and we beat them at their place. We’re a better team.”

Comings and goings

Ed Sweeney is out as Colgate football coach after the school’s first winless season in 105 years. … University of Minnesota men’s athletic director Mark Dienhart said his decision on whether to retain Jim Wacker as football coach will “probably be made sometime next week.”

Linfield College football coach Ed Langsdorf, who built a 32-9-1 record over four years, announced he is resigning for personal reasons.
