The road back to the national championship is going to be a long one for UCLA.
For the second time in three days, the Bruins were knocked off at the Maui Invitational in Lahaina, Hawaii, this time 75-71 by Vanderbilt in the fifth-place game.
Malik Evans scored 20 points and Drew Maddux 19 for the Commodores, who dropped the Bruins to 1-2. Santa Clara beat UCLA 78-69 in an opening-round game Monday.
UCLA got off to an 8-3 start, but Evans scored the next seven points to put the Commordores ahead.

Kerry Kittles scored 20 points, with the last two giving the Wildcats the winning margin, and Eric Eberz contributed 14 of his 19 points in the second half as Villanova won the Maui Invitational.
(5) Georgetown 94, (25) Ga. Tech 72
Allen Iverson had 23 points and six assists to lead the Hoyas past the Yellow Jackets in the semifinals of the Preseason NIT in New York.
The Hoyas will play Arizona for the title on Friday night.
Georgia Tech freshman Stephon Marbury, who was returning to his hometown for the first time as a collegian, finished with 13 points and eight assists and he, too, had his share of snappy passes that led to fast break layups.
(10) Iowa 78, Ohio 51
Iowa pressured Ohio into 29 turnovers and Russ Millard scored 18 points to lead the Hawkeyes past the Bobcats in the opening round of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Alaska.
Millard also had eight rebounds, a blocked shot and three steals for Iowa, which outrebounded Ohio 49-24 and scored 50 points inside, consistently muscling aside Ohio players.

Joseph Blair’s three-point play with 26 seconds left broke a two-minute scoreless drought as the Wildcats downed the Wolverines in the semifinals of the Preseason NIT in New York.
Michael Dickerson’s dunk with 2:30 to play gave the Wildcats a 79-71 lead, but the Wolverines (2-1) took advantage of a turnover and a missed 3-pointer to score six points over the next minute to get within two.
Arizona worked the 35-second shot clock and Melvin Simon, who led the Wildcats with 21 points, was able to rebound his missed drive and engineer Arizona’s final score.
