Lakeland Junior High Honors Four Students

The Lakeland Junior High School Students of the Month for October are:

Jason Papetti and Stacey MacDonald, ninth grade; Angie Campbell, eighth grade; and Courtney Rothrock, seventh grade.

Students are selected on the basis of academic efforts, participation in activities, good citizenship and positive attitudes.

Papetti is the son of Anthony and Annette Papetti of Rathdrum. MacDonald is the daughter of Dan and Sonja MacDonald of Athol. Campbell is the daughter of Richard Campbell of Athol; and Rothrock is the daughter of Glen and Betsy Rothrock of Rathdrum.

Eric D. Feil recently completed Air Force ROTC field training encampment at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

The four-to-six-week summer curriculum consisted of orientation on jet aircraft, career opportunities, human relations education, and equal opportunity training. Physical fitness and survival training were also emphasized during the session.

Feil, a student at Charleston Southern University in South Carolina, is the son of James and Paulette Williams of Athol.

Army Pfc. Steven M. Alva, a 1991 Kamiah High School graduate, has received the Humanitarian Service Medal. The medal is awarded to military members who have provided assistance in a national or international disaster.

Alva, a combat engineer at Fort Hood, Texas, is the son of Frank Alva of Clarkston, Wash., and Cheryle Alva of Spokane.

The Idaho Cattle Association recently announced the winners of its first Speak Out Contest. First prize of $50 and a second prize ICA belt buckle were awarded to winners in three age categories for essays concerning a pressing issue in the beef industry.

Brenda Wood, Sandpoint, won first place in the 10-13 age group (250 words or less), and Scott Kennedy, Sandpoint, won second place in the 14-18 age group (350 words or less). Moscow youths Jodie Lanting and Maureen Olsen won first and second place in the 19-24 age group (500 words or less).

Essays were judged on originality, relevance of topic, clarity of expression and persuasiveness.

Lori Frank, Coeur d’Alene, will receive the 1995 Idaho Forest Products Outstanding Teacher Award. Frank, who teaches forestry, wildlife and biology at Coeur d’Alene High School, will receive a $450 grant for the school and a plaque.

Diane Riley, a first-grade teacher at Athol Elementary School, was received an honorary mention and will receive a certificate and a $100 grant for her school.

The award recognizes teachers using exemplary approaches to teach about forest-related topics. Teachers throughout Idaho were nominated by their peers, principals, superintendents, parents and others to receive the awards.
