Five Candidates Seek City Council Post

The last time there were resignations from the Coeur d’Alene City Council, 22 people applied for the open seats.

Only five have formally applied to replace Dan English, who left the council to take the Kootenai County clerk’s job.

Candidates include two attorneys, a convenience store owner, a homemaker and a retired Forest Service employee.

Susan Servick is a Coeur d’Alene native who does defense work in civil litigation.

Scott Poorman also is a local attorney.

CarolAnn Flegel is a homemaker who has lived here most of her life, said Mayor Al Hassell.

Deanna Goodlander owns Goodie’s Quick Stop and a trailer court, he said.

The final candidate is Sam Sears, who retired from the U.S. Air Force and also a 20-year career with the Forest Service. Sears ran for the council in the general election and lost by fewer than 200 votes.

Two people who missed the deadline for applications will not be considered, Hassell said.

Hassell has interviewed the five candidates and is forwarding their applications to the City Council. He will recommend a person for the seat, subject to council approval. The mayor hopes to have the new council member appointed by the Dec. 19 meeting.
