Local Military Members Receive Promotions

The following local military personnel have been promoted to their present ranks:

Maj. Steven Schenk, an Army ROTC instructor at the University of Minneapolis, Minn. He is a 1980 graduate of University High School and a 1984 graduate of Gonzaga University. He is the son of James and Michael Ann Schenk, Spokane.

Maj. Wallace Langbehn Jr., stationed with the Air Force at Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, N.M. He is the son of Wallace Langbehn, Spokane and is a graduate of St. George’s School and Gonzaga University.

Second Lt. Pamela Cummings, stationed with the Marine Corps in Quantico, Va. She is the daughter of Gary Cummings, Moscow, Idaho, and Carol and Jimmy Jones, Spokane. She is a 1987 graduate of Mead High School and a 1991 graduate of Washington State University.

The following local military people have received the following awards:

Spec. Kevin Howie, son of Wayne Howie, Spokane, has been decorated with the Army Achievement Medal. He is a heavy-wheel vehicle mechanic at Fort Hood, Texas. He is a 1992 graduate of Mead High School.

Lt. David Buchholz, son of Les and Judy Buchholz, Spokane, received the Air Medal while serving with the Navy with Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 132 aboard the USS Saratoga. His squadron is based in Oak Harbor, Wash. Buchholz is a 1985 graduate of University High School and a graduate of Washington State University.

Gonzaga University honored the following local graduates at its annual Distinguished Alumni Merit Awards Recognition Dinner held in September:

Gene Annis, a 1959 graduate, formed his own firm with George Shields and Eldon Reiley, the genesis of what is now Lukins & Annis, the largest law firm in Eastern Washington and North Idaho. He serves on the Catholic Charities Low Income Housing Corporation Board, is a member of the Gonzaga School of Law’s Board of Advisors and sits on the Gonzaga University Board of Regents.

Joseph “Jerry” Monks, has served as a professor of operations management at GU’s School of Business Administration since 1977. The 1955 graduate in mechanical engineering was recognized as the 1995 Washington Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. He is co-director of Adopt-A-Family, a program he started in 1985 to help Mayan Indians in Guatemala become self sufficient.

Tyler Byers, an eighth-grader and Associated Student Body president at Sacajawea Middle School, participated in the Junior National Wheelchair Racing event in Colorado this past summer. He received six gold medals out of the eight events and was chosen Male Junior Athlete of the Year by Spokes and Sport magazine.

Beatrix McElroy, member of the Esther Reed Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, was recently honored for her many hours of service at Crosswalk, where she has volunteered. She received the National Excellence in Community Service certificate at a recent meeting.
