Jamison Puts Lakeland’s Win On Ice

Amber Jamison served the final four points and had 11 kills Thursday in Lakeland’s 15-7, 15-10 A-2 District I-II volleyball win at Moscow.

The Hawks (10-11) advance to a Saturday district matchup at home in Rathdrum against Priest River (15-8), the Intermountain League’s second-place team.

Lakeland scored the first seven points of the first game and broke from a 9-all tie in the second game. Jenny Borg had six kills and four digs, Cassie Beyer 16 assists, Cora Christensen five blocks and Rachael MacMullen four digs for Lakeland.

The Bears (7-12) were eliminated.

Bonners Ferry (10-13) rallied to defeat Kellogg (7-13) 4-15, 15-6, 15-7 in the night’s other loser-out match. No other details were reported. Bonners Ferry plays Saturday at Rathdrum against league champion St. Maries (20-4).

Idaho state soccer

Meridian beat Pocatello 2-0 and Boise stopped Centennial 2-1 in boys State A-1 openers in Boise.

North Idaho’s entry, Lake City, opens today against Meridian.

Boise beat Bishop Kelly 1-0 in a girls A-1 opener.

Sandpoint, from the North Idaho Independent League, meets an opponent to be determined.

College cross country

The North Idaho College men and women have been ranked in the top 10 of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll.

The Cardinals women are tied for seventh with Brevard (N.C) College. NIC’s men are tied for 10th with Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College. Both NIC teams are loaded with local high school standouts.

NIC will compete Oct. 28 in the national-qualifying Region 18 meet, which will be held at Finch Arboretum in Spokane.

Horse racing

Today’s program at Playfair Race Course, where the track is undergoing renovation, has been canceled.

Eight hundred cubic yards of additional sandy surface have been added to the five-furlong oval, and as a result, the track was closed to training Thursday and today. Track superintendent Earl Doidge expects his crew to finish grooming the new surface this afternoon.

Greater Spokane League volleyball

North Central and Lewis and Clark, both 9-5, won to remain neck-and-neck in the standings.

Tamara Van Engelen had 17 kills and three blocks as NC stopped visiting Rogers 15-5, 15-8, 15-12. Teana Scott led the Pirates (2-12) with eight kills and four blocks.

Erin Naipo’s 16 kills and 17 digs, and Ingrid Lindeblad’s 24 assists guided LC to a 15-11, 5-15, 15-9, 15-7 win at Shadle Park (4-10). Molly Hathaway had 19 assists and 13 digs for the Highlanders, who are one game out of playoff contention with two matches remaining.

Gonzaga Prep (14-0) added an exclamation point to its league title with a 17-15, 15-10, 15-9 win over visiting University (8-7). Jennifer Williams and Brandy Barratt had 12 kills and five blocks apiece for Prep. Sally Jamison led the Titans with eight kills and 10 digs.

Frontier girls soccer

Four different players scored Thursday as visiting Deer Park/Riverside stopped East Valley 4-0 to tie the Knights for first place.

Katie Bowers, Traci Koesel, Danae Anderson and Bernice Stime scored for DP/R (9-2-0, 18 points), which lost to EV (8-1-2, 18) in their initial meeting. The league season ends Tuesday. A seeding playoff will be held Thursday if needed.

Also in the Frontier League, Cheryl Nelson scored three times and assisted on one of Dawn Salfer’s two goals as visiting and third-place West Valley (7-1-3, 17) beat Cheney 5-0.
