Gsl At A Glance

CV 37, LC 20

Turning point

An offensive pass interference call against the Tigers deep in CV territory stalled a great scoring opportunity early in the fourth quarter and LC never threatened again until it was too late.

Stars of the game

The CV offensive line allowed Giorgio Usai to turn an inside running game into a track meet. “With huge holes like that, it’s not hard to get yards,” said Usai, who rushed for 285 yards and five touchdowns on 26 carries.

Notable

“I guess you can see why No. 6 squats 475 pounds,” CV coach Rick Giampietri said. “He shook some people out there.” Usai is 5-foot-6, 160 pounds. Overall, the Bears rushed for 328 yards…. LC opened the game with a 15-play, 78-yard drive that took half of the first quarter. Seven of the plays were passes. LC quarterback Paul Mencke finished with 19 completions in 43 attempts for 300 yards, but was 7 of 22 in the second half. “It certainly was a break (from LC’s running tradition),” coach John Hook said. “We were prepared to make that break, but we’re very disappointed we didn’t run the ball better.” The Tigers had 37 yards rushing.

G-Prep 20, NC 10

Turning point

Prep fumbled the punt after NC’s first possession and the Indians took over on the Bullpups’ 37. However, three plays netted 2 yards and the Indians didn’t threaten until down 20-0. “If we could have moved it even 10 yards and just kicked a field goal,” NC coach Jerry McCullough said. “That was a key.”

Stars of the game

The Gonzaga Prep defense, with two sophomores in the backfield, shut down the Indians. Joe Ascolese had 61 yards rushing in the first half for the Bullpups, 10 more yards than the NC offense.

Notable

Prep fumbled five times, losing three, but the Indians couldn’t take advantage of the opportunities. … NC was without one of the league’s top returning running backs, Lewis Tomlinson, who injured a knee making a cut on the Albi turf during a practice last weekend… . NC’s Ryan Corigilano rushed for 106 yards on 15 carries.
