Lohr No Bore While Surging Past Struggling Golfers At Ontario

Compiled From Wire Services

Bob Lohr, seeking his first PGA Tour golf victory in seven years, shot a 5-under-par 67 Friday for a two-round total of 135 and a one-stroke lead over Andrew Magee in the Bell Canadian Open at Oakville, Ontario.

Magee, whose last win came at the 1994 Northern Telecom Open, shot 68 over chilly, wind-swept Glen Abbey Golf Course. Jim Gallagher Jr., a two-time winner this year, shot 68 and was at 137. Scott Dunlap, a U.S. native playing on the Canadian Tour, had 67 for 138.

The second round was a disaster for some, however. First-round leader Russ Cochran followed his 66 with an 80.

Five players withdrew. Four quit prior to the start of the second round. Wayne Levi, who shot 77 during the first round, picked up after bogeying three of the first six holes Friday.

Alison Nicholas had a 6-under-par 66 to take a two-shot lead over four players after the first round of the LPGA Ping-AT&T Wireless Services Golf Championship at Portland.

Robin Walton of Clarkston and Tracy Hanson of Rathdrum shot 72s.

At Kenmore, Wash., Don January, Jimmy Powell and Joe Jimenez shot 5-under-par 67s to share the first-round lead in the GTE Northwest Classic.

At Missoula, Chris Johnson of Castle Rock, Colo., fired a 6-under-par 66 at Larchmont Golf Course to take a three-stroke lead after the first round of the Montana Open. Mike DeLong of Coeur d’Alene shot a 70.
