Annexation Proposal Gets Hearing Multi-Family Housing Included In Plans

A proposed 36-acre annexation for residential and commercial development is the subject of a public hearing tonight before the Post Falls City Council.

Schneidmiller Brothers Inc. wants annexation of property on either side of Mullan Avenue west of Syringa Street and east of Idaho Street.

A 10-acre parcel north of Mullan is designated for multi-family development, possibly apartments, and the property south of Mullan is designated for commercial.

Ten acres of the commercial property has been given to Kootenai Medical Center for an outpatient health facility.

At an Aug. 8 hearing before the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, several residents of Shannon Lane spoke out against annexing the residential parcel.

Those residents feared that apartment buildings there could contribute to crowded schools and possibly lower their property values.

The commission recommended approval of the annexation, with the condition that the developer assist with the cost of installing a traffic signal at Idaho Street and Mullan Avenue.

In other business tonight, the public works department will show a short video on a interagency wastewater study. The Kootenai Regional Wastewater Coordinating Committee is conducting the study to find alternatives for wastewater and wastewater by-product disposal.

Public meetings on the study are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Coeur d’Alene City Hall and 8 p.m. in Hayden City Hall on Sept. 27; and at 6:30 p.m. in Templin’s Resort and 8 p.m. in Rathdrum City Hall on Sept. 28.
