Fowlers Split UW, Cougars

Jered Fowler hit a three-run homer in the eighth inning, then pitched the ninth for a save as Washington State University salvaged the second game of a Pacific-10 Conference North doubleheader Saturday by beating visiting Washington 7-4.

The Huskies won the opener 8-6 as Fowler’s younger brother, Blair, (2-3) picked up the win with four innings of four-hit ball.

Dave Wheeler (1-2) of WSU and Mead High, who entered in the sixth, earned the second-game win. The Cougars (14-26, 3-4) trailed the nightcap 4-2 when Rob Ryan, of Shadle Park High, hit a towering, two-run homer to center.

UW’s Christian Shewey had two singles and three RBIs in the opener.

The clubs conclude their four-game series today at 1 p.m. The Huskies (16-20, 5-2) lead the series 2-1.

Alexander (2-1), making his third start, retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced to help the Zags to their eighth consecutive win.

Wong’s homer, his third of the year, came off Mike Megee (0-2) with no outs in the sixth. Megee, in relief of starter Matt Foran, allowed a single to Matt Brunell and committed a fielding error on Brendan Hare’s grounder before Wong’s homer.
