Joseph Mesi of Tonawanda, N.Y., upset trials champion Lawrence Clay-Bey of Hartford, Conn., the 1995-96 U.S. champion, 26-11 at super heavyweight. Mesi, 22, outpunched the 30-year-old 16-3 in the third round and forced him to take a standing 8-count.
Vitaly Scherbo, Yuri Chechi and Svetlana Chorkina retained their apparatus titles in the World Gymnastics Championships at San Juan, Puerto Rico.
