Csi Rides Gillette To Win Over Nic

Gillette made certain that College of Southern Idaho didn’t have a close shave on Saturday.

Chris Gillette went 4 for 5, with three runs batted in and three runs scored, to lead CSI to an 8-4 Region 18 baseball win over visiting North Idaho College at Twin Falls.

The Golden Eagles reached starter Shelby Hawkins (1-2) for five runs in the first two innings. Ryan Guenter of the Cardinals hit a solo homer, his first of the year, during a three-run fourth. NIC’s Jason Bartell had three singles.

Jason Uberuaga smashed two-run homers in the fifth and sixth as the Bulldogs (17-23, 5-14) swept the visiting Gaels (11-28, 6-13) in a West Coast Conference doubleheader at August/ A.R.T. Stadium.

In the opener Tory Wulf’s first homer of the year, leading off the sixth, broke a 4-all tie for the Zags .

Uberuaga has hit three homers this weekend and six on the year. GU’s Scott Asan hit his first career homer in the sixth of the opener.

The Bulldogs played without regular shortstop Kevin Workman, whose grandfather died early Saturday morning. The four-game series ends with a single game at 1 p.m. today. GU has won the first three.

Jason Hairston’s grand slam in the first game and a run-scoring bunt by Rob Ryan in the nightcap led the Cougars (20-30, 7-8) to a Pacific-10 Conference North sweep over the visiting Beavers (24-13-1, 7-8).

Hairston’s homer in the third - his eighth of the year - made a winner of Robert Ramsay (2-6), who struck out nine in pitching the seven-inning opener. Greg Muehlbauer (2-1), in relief of starter Ryan Post, threw 5-1/3 innings for the game-two win, WSU’s third straight over OSU.

Mark Bowman’s third homer of the year, a two-run shot in the first, helped the Cougs to a quick start in the second game.

Ryan Stevens (3-3) threw a three-hit shutout and Alex Schuerman hit his fourth homer of the year as the Pirates (14-13, 4-7) completed a Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges sweep of the visiting Boxers (12-13, 4-9).

In the opener, Yoshito Ezaki’s two-run double guided a four-run fourth and Ryan Swan homered in the fifth to support Jason McDougal (3-3) as Whitworth snapped a five-game losing streak.

Pinch-runner Brent Gillispe scored on a two-out error in the bottom of the seventh as the Sasquatch (12-12, 8-7) beat the visiting Knights in the first game of an NWAACC doubleheader at Spokane Falls CC.

Wenatchee won the closing game with a three-run 10th, highlighted by a two-run single from Shadle Park High grad Brett Corigliano.

Trevor Davis of the Sasquatch tied a school single-season record with his 14th double. Chad Ripke, Jason Francek and Andy Sage had two RBIs apiece for CCS in the opener.
