Kafelnikov Dumped

Yevgeny Kafelnikov, the No. 1 seed and French Open champion, and Richard Krajicek, seeded second and the Wimbledon winner, were shockingly beaten in straight sets in the quarterfinals of the Pilot Pen International at New Haven, Conn.

Wildcard Alex O’Brien ousted Kafelnikov, of Russia, 6-4, 6-4, while Jan Siemerink, the 10th seed, upset Krajicek, of the Netherlands, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2.

Pete Sampras put an end to the surprising run by tour newcomer Tommy Haas with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the quarterfinals of the RCA Championships.

In other quarterfinal matches, No. 2 Goran Ivanisevic outlasted unseeded Lionel Roux 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (5-7), 6-2; No. 13 Bohdan Ulihrach beat No. 11 Alex Corretja, 6-4, 7-5; and No. 5 Todd Martin beat No. 4 Thomas Enqvist 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3).

Anke Huber outlasted Irina Spirlea 6-3, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4 to advance to the semifinals of the $450,000 Acura Classic at Huntington Beach, Calif.

No. 2 Huber will meet No. 7 Karina Habsudova of Slovakia in today’s semi. Habsudova surprised No. 3 Kimiko Date of Japan 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

The winner of Friday night’s quarterfinal match between No. 4 Lindsay Davenport beat No. 5 Amanda Coetzer 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 for the right to play No. 1 Steffi Graf in the other semifinal.
