Stottlemyre’s Gem Turns Back Florida

Todd Stottlemyre took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Gary Gaetti homered Sunday as the host St. Louis Cardinals completed their first sweep of the Florida Marlins with a 5-3 win.
Stottlemyre (11-8) held the Marlins without a hit until Devon White singled with one out in the seventh.
Dennis Eckersley loaded the bases with one out in the ninth, but got Gary Sheffield - who earlier hit his 35th home run - to hit into a game-ending double play for his 21st save.
Braves 2, Pirates 1 (14) Atlanta
Chipper Jones, hitless in his first six at-bats, singled home the winning run in the 14th inning as Atlanta beat Pittsburgh.
The Braves have won four in a row and seven of eight. They posted their first three-game sweep of Pittsburgh since July 1991.
The Pirates have lost three straight and eight of nine.
Reds 9, Rockies 4 Cincinnati
Kevin Mitchell’s three-run homer and Joe Oliver’s three-run double sent Cincinnati over Colorado, its third win over the Rockies in 24 hours.
The Reds matched their season high by moving three games over .500 (62-59). The defending N.L. Central champions have won 18 of 28 to move back into contention.
Padres 8, Mets 0 Monterrey, Mexico
A dehydrated Ken Caminiti, who received intravenous fluids 1-1/2 hours before the game, hit two home runs and pitcher Joey Hamilton had his first career homer as San Diego topped New York in the finale of major league baseball’s first regular-season foray into Mexico.
New York catcher Todd Hundley missed the start after coming down with a case of food poisoning.
Phillies 7, Giants 6 Philadelphia
Rookie Wendell Magee Jr., who entered the game because of an injury, went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs as Philadelphia averted a series sweep by rallying past San Francisco.
Philadelphia ended a 10-game homestand with only two wins.
Cubs 10, Astros 8 Chicago
Pinch-hitter Leo Gomez hit a three-run double to highlight Chicago’s six-run sixth inning that rallied the Cubs over Houston.
Dave Magadan, Luis Gonzalez, Scott Servais and Jose Hernandez each had three hits for the Cubs.
Expos 7, Dodgers 3 Los Angeles
Mark Leiter, winless in his last eight starts before joining Montreal, won his third consecutive start as the Expos ended a three-game losing streak with a win over Los Angeles.
Rondell White had three hits, including his second career grand slam, as Montreal snapped a seven-game losing streak against the Dodgers.
Clearing the bases
Barry Bonds hit his 34th homer of the season and his 24th at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia, moving him within two of Gary Carter’s record for Vet homers by an opponent. … Pittsburgh rookie catcher Jason Kendall has struck out only four times in 105 plate appearances since the All-Star break. … In 96 starts since the 1993 All-Star game, Atlanta’s Greg Maddux has allowed more than three earned runs only 11 times. … The Cardinals’ Brian Jordan is 12 for 18 in bases-loaded situations this season.
