Scaffolding Falls Onto Manhattan Sidewalk
Scaffolding laden with heavy bags came crashing down onto a midtown Manhattan sidewalk Tuesday, crushing cars and taxis and briefly trapping several people.
About half a block’s length of the structure fell. Ten people, including a workman, were injured.
A company doing facade restoration work on a 30-story building at 44th Street and Third Avenue said the collapse was caused by a taxi that struck the scaffolding.
Police were checking that explanation and the possibility the scaffolding - built above the sidewalk - was overloaded.
