Eastern Women’s Comeback Falls Short
Despite the 14 points and 13 rebounds of Eastern Washington sophomore Shana Ray, the Eagles lost to Southern Utah 60-54 Wednesday in a non-conference women’s basketball game at Reese Court.
Eastern (2-4) trailed by 11 early in the second half, but a 10-0 run pulled the Eagles within one with 15:36 to play. The Thunderbirds (4-6) never allowed Eastern to tie or take the lead as SUU opened a six-point lead with 31 seconds left on a pair of free throws by Krista Smith.
Ray had eight points and nine rebounds in the second half as she fueled Eastern’s comeback. Rachel Ferguson chipped in a career-high 12 points for the Eagles, who were 0 of 12 from 3-point range and made just 32.8 percent of their shots.
Southern Utah had 27 turnovers as Eastern’s Jennifer Sutter finished with three steals to go along with six assists.
