Oregon’s Defense Shuts Down WSU
College women
The Oregon Ducks limited Washington State to a paltry 11 first-half points, then fought off every second-half challenge by the Cougars to score a 58-49 win in a Pacific-10 Conference women’s basketball game Saturday at McArthur Court in Eugene, Ore.
WSU (15-7 overall, 6-5 in Pac-10 play) was paced by Jenni Ruff’s 18 points, including 15 in the second half. Ruff also led all players with 15 rebounds. Yvonne Kunze added 16 for WSU, while Julie Wight grabbed a season-high 10 rebounds.
Renae Fegent paced the Ducks (14-7, 6-5) with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Betty Ann Boeving added 12 points, while Arianne Boyer scored 11 as Oregon moved into a three-way tie for third in the league standings with WSU and Washington.
“We basically dug a hole too deep,” Cougars coach Harold Rhodes said. “We had too many people standing around. I was disappointed, with a game this important, we didn’t come out with more fight.”
WSU pulled to within five points, 44-39, with 5:43 to play, but that was as close as the Cougars could get. Oregon converted 9 of 13 from the free-throw line in the closing 3 minutes to maintain its advantage.
