Portland 89, Pepperdine 76

Rick Brainard scored 24 points and Kweemada King 20 to lead the host Pilots past the Waves.

Chivo Anderson added 12 points and Greg Klosterman added 11 as Portland remained in the thick of the championship race.

Pepperdine’s Gerald Brown, the league’s leading scorer (18.5 ppg), scored 29 points, 18 in the second half.

The Pilots trailed 42-41 at halftime but built a 52-48 lead to open the second half. Brainard hit a 15-footer to give Portland the six-point lead at 17:09 of the second.

After Pepperdine went on a 10-0 run for a 58-52 lead, Klosterman started a 9-0 run at 7:14 that put Portland back on top 63-62.

King’s baseliner boosted the Pilots’ lead to 70-62 with 5:15 left.

Reserve Reggie Steele scored 15 points as the Gaels ended a five-game home conference losing streak by topping the Toreros at Moraga, Calif.

Jumoke Horton pulled down 11 rebounds for the Gaels, who dominated the backboards 44-21.
