Parenting Resolution Rejected

The House resoundingly rejected on Friday a resolution urging school districts to include parenting courses in their curriculum.

Opponents feared it would turn into broader sex education courses.

The resolution, which cleared the House Education Committee without opposition, failed on a 51-13 vote. It had four sponsors, but just nine other lawmakers voted for it.

Sponsors said parenting is one of the most important duties that people have, yet it is not taught in the schools.

“We teach the 3 Rs in our schools and they are very important,” said Rep. Maynard Miller, R-Moscow. “There is a fourth R … responsibility. That’s what this resolution is about.”
