Roger Hough Receives Master Chef Certification

Roger Hough, executive chef for the Beachouse Restaurant in Coeur d’Alene, recently received the title of Master Chef from the American Culinary Federation.

Hough is one of only 65 Master Chefs in America, with only two others in the Pacific Northwest. In order to obtain Master Chef accreditation, which is the highest rating given by the federation, a chef must pass 16 tests in 10 days.

Testing includes categories of American Regional, Classical French, International, Asian, Classical Pastry, Bread Baking, Buffet Catering and Nutrition. On the last day of testing, candidates are given a mystery box of groceries, asked to design a menu, then given four hours to prepare a four-course dinner for 10 people with the grocery ingredients.

Hough, who has been a chef for 27 years, is the only chef to pass the Master Chefs final test and now holds more certifications than any other chef in America.

RE/MAX Preferred Realtors recently announced that 1995 franchise awards were given to nine of their Coeur d’Alene office associates. Winners were as follows: Deborah Kemp, Platinum Club Top Honor; Patrick Hall and Helena Vieira, 100 percent Club Award; Noel Adam and Dennis Quinn, Executive Club Award; and Nancy Adam, Karen Corcoran, Kelly Hanson and Marsha Meadows, President’s Club Award.

Sarah Polk, Post Falls, recently received an honorable mention in the national Spirit of Betty Crocker Contest.

The contest was created to select women representatives who will serve as inspiration for a computer-generated portrait of the namesake that will appear on products beginning in March.

Contestants were selected on the basis of commitment to family and friends, enjoyment of cooking and baking, and community involvement.

Polk, 19, was the youngest entrant among several thousand in the contest commemorating Betty Crocker’s 75th birthday.

The following local students have made the Dean’s List at out-of-area colleges or Universities they are attending: Carl Miller, Coeur d’Alene, and Jason Leubner, Hayden Lake, University of Oregon; Molly L. Lewis-Clark State College President’s List 3.75 gpa or higher: Kimberley Duncan, Michael Howard and Deborah Stoddard, all of Coeur d’Alene; Edward Blanchette, Christi Hill, Julie Lunceford and Roby Niehoff, all of Hayden Lake; Amy Bell and Patricia Easton, both Post Falls; Nancy Phillips, Spirit Lake; and Staci Cady, Kimberly Carpenter, Jason Quigley and Bobbie Thompson, all of St. Maries.

Vice President’s List 3.25-3.74 gpa: Cami Moffat, Peggy Murray and Marian Troutman, all of Coeur d’Alene; Jerry Rupinski, Hayden Lake; Tim Litzenberger, Post Falls; and Kimberly Cuddy, Rathdrum; and David Biery, Chad Linton, Diana Miller and Steve Thompson, all of St. Maries.

Four local volunteers have recently received national awards in recognition of their outstanding service to the Inland Empire Council of Camp Fire Boys and Girls.

Betsy Fulwilder and Kim Strom both received the Wakan Award for exceptional and imaginative leadership and service.

Capt. Fred Finney, of Coeur d’Alene Cruises and Edward Wroe, of Lukins and Annis each received Plaques of Appreciation.
