Cougars Lose Baseball Opener

Washington State’s first batter of the baseball season hit a home run off Hawaii pitcher Mark Johnson.

Johnson made few other mistakes, settling down after Mike Wetmore’s blast to strike out 11 Cougars Saturday during the Rainbows’ 7-2 non-conference win in Honolulu.

Johnson, who pitched for Team USA last summer, allowed five hits and walked one in seven innings. Randon Ho pitched the final two innings and struck out five more.

The Rainbows broke open the game with a five-run seventh highlighted by Robert Medeiros’ two-run double off Dave Wheeler of Mead High. The loss went to Heath McLellan, the second of seven WSU pitchers.

WSU’s other run came on Josh Hamik’s eighth-inning sacrifice fly that scored Wetmore.

The Cougars play seven more games in Hawaii.

College track

Eastern Washington’s Jennifer Bauman set a school record in the triple jump and the Eagles’ Les Timm came close to another record at EWU’s Early Bird meet.

Bauman’s jump of 36 feet, 3 inches was a quarter-inch better than her record set last year. EWU’s Taneka Sauls placed second, with a 36-2-1/4 leap that is second-best in school history.

Timm won the 35-pound weight throw with a near-record 58-5. Noah Chambreau’s 61-3/4 effort last year won him the Big Sky Conference championship.

Idaho’s sprinters finished 1-2-3 in the men’s 55 meters, topped by the 6.53 seconds of Jason St. Hill. Vandal Leonard Brittner won the triple jump with a 45-4-1/2 effort.

Idaho’s Jill Wimer won the 20-pound weight throw (41-4) and Nikki Veirsen won the 400 in 1:00.63.

Frontier League wrestling

Consecutive first-round pins by Dan Kruger (158), Matt Morin (168) and Jared Bailey (178) gave Riverside (2-3) a 34-14 lead on the way to a 40-35 win at Cheney (0-4).
