Constantine Overtakes Ennis At O’Brien Decathlon
Robert Constantine won the discus, pole vault and javelin competitions Sunday to overtake Shipley Ennis and win the Dan O’Brien High School Decathlon at Spokane Falls Community College.
Constantine, of Winnie, Texas, compiled 6,592 points. Ennis, from Woodinville, Wash., led after Saturday’s events and won the 1,500 meters on Sunday. He finished with 6,538 points.
Constantine cleared 15 feet, 5 inches in the polve vault, good for 819 points. Nic McGhie, who finished fourth, breezed to victory in Sunday’s 110 high hurdles, finishing in 14.88 seconds to score 864 points.
Curtis Pugsley of Park Valley, Utah, was second in the 1,500 and third overall.
Spokane’s Ty Williams (5,394) was sixth out of eight competitors.
Horse racing
Pleas Write blew past the rest of the 11-horse field just past the quarter pole and went to win the $35,000 Boeing Handicap at Emerald Downs in Auburn, Wash.
The 3-year-old filly, owned by Emerald Downs president Ron Crockett, set the new track’s 6-1/2-furlong record at 1:16 3/5.
Frank Gonsalves was aboard as the filly took a five-length victory.
