Task Force Takes Closer Look At Potential Sites

A task force got a closer look Friday at four Seattle suburban locations selected by billionaire Paul Allen as potential sites for a new pro football stadium for the Seahawks.

Ronald Leibsohn of Leibsohn & Co. presented the Seahawks/Kingdome Renovation Task Force with an overview of each site on behalf of Allen’s group.

Allen, co-founder of Microsoft Corp., is considering an option to buy the Seahawks from Ken Behring.

If a remodeling of the Kingdome proves impractical, a new stadium could be built in the suburbs, Allen’s representatives.

Raiders’ Kennedy upgraded

A medical examination has found that Oakland Raiders offensive tackle Lincoln Kennedy, formerly of the University of Washington, does not have a torn left biceps, as originally feared.

Kennedy, hurt Monday, will probably be able to play in the Raiders’ second exhibition game, Friday night against the host Arizona Cardinals.

Jets trade Yarborough

New York traded disgruntled Ryan Yarborough to Green Bay for a conditional undisclosed draft choice in 1997.

Yarborough, the Jets’ second-round draft pick in 1994, left training camp on July 20, telling receivers coach Richard Mann he was “frustrated and mentally spent” and was considering leaving football and going into private business.

Barnett has knee surgery

Doctors repaired torn cartilage in receiver Fred Barnett’s right knee, but extensive damage may keep him out of the Dolphins’ lineup longer than first expected.

He injured his right knee in a Thursday practice against the Washington Redskins.

Chiefs sign Tongue

Kansas City signed defensive back Reggie Tongue, a second-round draft pick from Oregon State, to a four-year contract.

Giants sign

Jones Cedric Jones, the Oklahoma defensive end who was the fifth pick overall in the NFL draft, signed a six-year, $12.2 million contract with New York.

No details were revealed, but sources said the contract was six years in length and worth $12,191,250, which included a $6 million bonus paid in full upon signing and a $635,000 salary in his rookie season.

Rice may return shortly

San Francisco 49ers team president Carmen Policy said he expects All-Pro wide receiver Jerry Rice to report by early next week, though he does not expect to have a contract extension for Rice before the beginning of the regular season.

Rice was scheduled to report with other veterans July 20 but was excused to stay with his wife, recuperating from complications involved with the delivery of the couple’s third child.

Pelfrey signs with Bengals

Doug Pelfrey, who had been on the verge of ending talks with the Cincinnati Bengals about a multi-year contract, signed a five-year deal with the team. Financial terms weren’t released.

Colts sign Dent

Richard Dent agreed to a one-year contract with Indianapolis, reuniting the former Chicago defensive lineman with Colts director of football operations Bill Tobin.
