Mask-Making For Kids Celebrates Mexican Culture

Joe Ehrbar Staff Writer

Cheney Cowles Museum and Spokane Art School aren’t just collaborating on ArtFest this weekend.

Although it’s on a much smaller scale, the groups will join forces for two mask-making workshops for children on Saturday, June 15.

The mask-making workshops coincide with the exhibit “Las Caras de Mexico: Pasado y Presente” (“The Faces of Mexico: Past and Present”).

Each workshop is two hours in duration. The one for children in grades 1-3 is from 10 a.m. to noon, and the workshop for kids in grades 4-6 is from 1 to 3 p.m.

To register, call Judy Grollmus at the museum, 456-3932, ext. 128.

Auditions

Spokane Civic Theatre, 1020 N. Howard, will conduct auditions for its summer musical, “Falsettos,” from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturday in the Firth Chew Studio Theatre, downstairs.

The musical will be directed by Troy Nickerson with musical direction by Scarlett Hepworth.

Auditioners must prepare a one-minute song as well as a song from “Falsettos.” For an audition time and location, call 747-1181.

Lake City Playhouse in Coeur d’Alene (1320 E. Garden) is holding auditions Tuesday and Wednesday, June 11 and 12, at 7 p.m. for the musical, “Fame.”

Major roles are available for men and women, 16 and older.

To audition for a singing role, prepare a one-minute song. An accompanist will be provided, or you can bring your own. Dancers should be ready to dance.

Aside from the main characters, there are several roles for extras that don’t require singing or dancing.

For additional information, call the playhouse box office between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, (208) 667-1323.

Pullman’s Summer Palace Repertory Company will conduct auditions for Lionel Bart’s 1960 musical, “Oliver!” on Saturday and Sunday, June 8 and 9, in the Daggy Hall Theatre at Washington State University.

Roles are open for both adults and children.

Audition times are 9:30 a.m. to noon, and 1:30 to 4 p.m. on Saturday; and 1:30 to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Auditioners will read from the script, learn a few dance steps and sing a song. For more information, call (509) 335-3239.

Also, Summer Palace will hold auditions for two other productions - “Love and Lunacy” and “East Lynne” - on Monday, from 1:30-4 p.m., in Daggy Hall’s Jones Theatre. Both plays have adult roles only. Auditioners do not have to prepare in advance. Call (509) 335-3239 for details.

Art walks

Sandpoint’s annual summer-long art exhibition, Artwalk, is already under way.

Ten Sandpoint area galleries are participating in this year’s Artwalk, sponsored by the Pend Oreille Arts Council. Each gallery hosts three shows throughout the summer and each show lasts five weeks.

Galleries include Pend Oreille Arts Council Gallery, Eve’s Leaves, the Book Gallery, Alpine Shop, John Beutler and Associates, Panhandle Art Glass, Eklektos Gallery, Art Works Gallery, Garden Restaurant and East Bonner County Library.

Most exhibitors are open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. To assist visitors, brochures with a map and exhibit descriptions are available at the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce or from any participating gallery.
