Hewlett-Packard Awards Scholarships To Students

Heather Sazama, Daniel Noble and Christopher Stainbrook will each receive a $2,000 scholarship award presented to the children of employees at the Hewlett-Packard Co.’s Spokane site on the basis of merit.

Sazama, daughter of Patric Sazama of Coeur d’Alene, and Stainbrook, son of Jerry Stainbrook of Coeur d’Alene, recently graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School. Noble, son of John Noble of Post Falls, is a recent graduate of Post Falls High School.

Scholarship recipients submitted a written application and were interviewed by a committee drawn from the Spokane community. Scholarships are funded primarily from local and nationwide HP employees, with this year’s Spokane site raising nearly $17,000.

Seven local youths recently attended the American Legion Gem Boys State conference to learn lessons in city, county and state government.

Jason Clifford, Matthew Hensley and Jim Windisch, all of Lake City High School, and Steven Pilkington, Mike Roth, Nathan Spencer and Tony Wozniak, all of Coeur d’Alene High School, were some of the nearly 300 participants at the Idaho Boys State conference who just completed their junior year in high school.

Students created bills and passed them through committee and a mock House and Senate on to the governor. Lessons took place in the actual House and Senate chambers in Boise.

The $175 per-student-fee for the conference was paid by sponsor organizations, including the American Legion Post No. 14, Coeur d’Alene Rotary, Knights of Columbus Council No. 1363 and Bishop Kelly Assembly, Hecla Mining Co., the Eagles Aeries Nos. 486 and 4080, 40/8 Voiture No. 1196, Coeur d’Alene Honda and the Prohaska Law Firm.
