Sterling Marlin used local experience to his benefit, breaking the Nashville Speedway USA track qualifying record (107.846 mph) in winning the pole for the Bellsouth/Opryland USA 320.

Kenny Wallace qualified second in a Ford at 112.897, with Spokane’s Chad Little third at 111.960 in a Pontiac.
